Movie Review: Home Run

Image
One of those movies that somehow quietly slips under the radar when it releases. But if and when you do manage to see it, you do stand up and say "Wow, Stunning" "Home Run" is an amazingly insightful and wholesome movie. It has been beautifully filmed and manages to maintain the focus on a very sensitive issue at hand.  The sports injury rehab and recovery process and the pain that comes with it, the importance of forgiving and trusting in the "God's will" has been very well highlighted.  The harsh realities of not-so-perfect things in one's life and having the courage to own up to them rather than drowning oneself in addictions, which can take multiple forms. This is a very realistic family movie that would surely make families sit down and have a discussion around: our personal choices and consequences that they have in our lives and the lives of those around us. In short "it brings home the message very well". 10.1.1

A year long experience/journey/ride: Loved it!

Well time flies, its been quite a while i wrote something here and a lot has changed since then. Yes, Blackberry is still alive and yes, without any Facebook support :P I am almost nearing the graduation day. Can you believe it almost the end of the year. What a life changing experience and one heck of a ride its been. Rarely there are experiences that leave you with a feeling of having got a lot more than what you had expected. And surely this experience of Supply Chain Program at Ross has been one of those. A great bunch of friends and an education that can be matched nowhere. When I chose to come to Ross, I was banking on the program to be more than just a bundle of case studies and courses, and it surely lived up to my expectations. The importance of Tauber internship, as an opportunity to solve real problems in real world with real money can't be stressed more. Thanks umich for opening up your doors and providing me a great platform. Go Blue!

Bidders lining up at blackberry office; Could Facebook be the one?

Last month Blackberry's announcement that it was putting itself on sale, didn't come as a surprise to most of us. Clearly, the company has struggled a lot in attempts to revive the days of old. The latest buzz in the market says that a number of bidders have lined up to take a closer look at the resources available at sale. But most of them are interested in the bits and pieces around the smartphone like the operating system and the keyboard patents but not so interested in the smartphones themselves.  Having been following all these mergers and announcements of take overs of various mobile and telecom units in recent types. I feel the latest wonder news could come from another tycoon company that looking to reinvent itself in domain beyond its traditional expertise, yes, that's Facebook. I believe, under current scenario a Facebook bid for blackberry could be a win-win situation for both companies and in particular it could provide the necessary arsenal to Mr. Zuckerbe...

“There’s always somebody out there. Always. And when that time comes and you find something standing in front of you, something that ain’t running and ain’t backin up and is hittin on you and your too damn tired to breathe. You find that situation on you, that good, Cuz thats baptizim under fire! Oh you get thru that and you find the only kind of respect that matters in this world, Self respect.” “I stopped thinking the way other people think a long time ago, you gotta think like you think” “What’s so crazy about standing toe-to-toe with someone saying “I am”? “ “The last thing to age on somebody is their heart. “ “It doesn’t matter how this looks to other people, it matters how it looks to you. If this is something you gotta do, then you do it. Fighters fight. ”

'Ten'ny Cherian commandments

Recently, one question in a MBA application got my mind rolling. The question was pretty straight forward and so seemed the answer to it but wasn't exactly so easy going. The question asked me "In your work experience, which manager/leader has impressed you the most? Tell in detail what qualities of this person you liked the most." Now, i've really been fortunate to have worked with some very clear headed managers and also some not so clear headed. So, it really helps to compare. But even though i didn't work directly with him, Tenny Cherian, stands in a league of his own.   But since i had not worked with him, my take was all based on second hand information or on an outsiders perspective, but then luckily i stumbled upon this blog on Cherian's Ten commandments by one of his team members, Shilpa Sehgal. The blog is very well written and explains each commandment in detail which in turn would help you know Cherian that I've known, even better. The TE...

Next what?

Well Christmas's over and up next is the New year's. It's really something about us, how we start planning for each so early. The talk of the town soon become "what are your plans" " what are you doing tonight". How people come up to you to know your plans and if exciting, then also be a part of it. Hmmm, well I didn't do much on the Christmas night, had some pending jobs to be completed. New years let's see its still a couple of days off.

Typical Aquarian!

Well its a strange morning, for one of the reasons is that i've just woken up with an urge to check out the typical traits of Aquarius zodiac sign....... One of the standout characteristics of those born under the Sun Sign of Aquarius is their unwillingness to follow the beaten track. With advancement and progress on their minds, there can be an irreverence to old and outdated ways of thinking and doing things. Many Aquarians aim to free themselves of personal and social conditioning. Although open to change in theory, Aquarians can be surprisingly stubborn. Their idealism runs strong, but they can be very fixed in their opinions. Often a bit aloof and even standoffish, Aquarians nonetheless are usually well-liked. They are curious and observant, and tolerant in a broad sense. Prejudice and bias is offensive to the typical Aquarius. Aquarians are generally very clever, witty, and intellectual. They value progress and frankness. It's difficult to throw Aquarians for ...

When the going gets tough, tough get going.. Retail network, lets help them :)

With all this FDI in retail debate doing the rounds in the nation, its reminds me how times like these  are the test of character. How the difficult times open up a window of opportunity for the brave to stand tall and make history.  The opponents of the retail FDI treat Walmart as its symbol and debate how this move of the government would leave the mom and pop store owners in a difficult situation. Personally i feel this argument holds no good as the bond between the consumer and these stores is too strong to be broken by some single walmart store in a city. Lets talk about Chennai, how many stores do you think will walmart open up here, one two or max three, which would be too less of city population coverage. Such stores will thrive only the monthly ration transactions and if the local kriyana stores can hold on the consumer base by improving their service. There clearly is every possibility that these stores can then give the FDI based stores a run for their money. But...

New Place, New friends, Strange Roomies

Image
So, its been  3 months of stay now in Chennai. Yes, Chennai! The feeling of staying in unfamiliar lands, really lured me into coming down South. The days started on a good note this time, with one of the best TQ stays in my TATA experience. Good, clean place with surprisingly nice North Indian food. The locality, close to the Thiruvanmiyur beach is really nice - clam and serene. Ok, anways moving on with my journey - Post TQ i've managed to find a new place to stay. This place Ram's Apartment - isn't that good as the TQ(even though its right across the street) but the TCS'ers staying there seemed fun people. So, yes I've shifted to this place now and it is going to be my sweet home away from home for next couple of months. So, new place and new friends. Oh yes, strange roomies! One from mexicana and the other a telugu! The two very different personalities. One, has been running after me to clear up the finances ever since I paid for some of the stuff a...

work - personal life balance, striking the right between the two is very important!

Ever since returning from Chennai last week, the plan was clear and simple i.e. to have this Oracle SDH app installed and configured in office as well as on my personal laptop. This new project and role has been driving me crazy and since its a new app for me i have been up for the task. Thinking on similar lines i had decided to download the setup files, got the net connection recharged and starting downloading the files. After almost 3 days of non-stop download activity yesterday i had the whole setup ready for a final installation click. But just when i was about to go for it, something stuck me.     "Oh God, what am i doing?" "Why do i wish to install the app on my personal laptop?"    Isn't the office stuff meant to be on on office laptop and not personal one! In fact such a dire strait did i find myself that i was so close to having the app installed on both the laptops. So that i could put in extra effort but is it worth it? No way, there ...

Avengers... Super Hit!!!!

Image
With a great company, nice movie and the IMAX 3D experience, Avengers gives you more than you expect from such Action loaded Hollywood flicks. The Avengers is a great flick, good at script, good at cast, great at comedy snippets here and there all through and simply awesome at the action sequences. The writer does justice to the various characters by creating the right ensemble and by keeping each super hero in the right shape. As fun and easy going part of Iron Man remains unchanged and so is the seriousness and leadership part of Captain America. The fun, comic part of Hulk is a pleasant part of the movie and used very well. The action sequences are awesome and easily make you skip heart beats. A must watch, scores 4 stars (* * * *)

Just stick in.... And Show them who you are....

Mixed feelings....

Image
Past couple of hours i've been having these mixed feelings doing rounds in my mind and clearly most vocal being that of being a loser, the fear of losing. This all started with that second last over of Piyush Chawla before which the Mumbai Indians needed 32 runs off 2 overs to win but at the end of this over the equation changed to 5 runs off last over to win and they did win in the end. May be my this over optimistic attitude is nothing but an illusion in this realistic world.  The successful are those who are realistic and yet dream of something out of the league by taking risks. Clearly not the ones who are over dreamy of things and try to be realistic at time.  I guess its time for me to get serious about life on the whole. There have been so many things going on off lately in my life. I clearly need to prioritize them and chuck out the ones that are just too dreamy. Miracles do happen, agreed but they do not happen everyday. And am surely n...
